Annual Sykesville carnival comes to town

Ferris wheels, merry-go-rounds and fireworks will once again dot the landscape of the Sykesville Freedom-District Fire Department grounds when the fire company’s carnival kicks off Monday and ends June 28.

In its 75th year, the Sykesville Freedom-District carnival will feature 22 tried-and-true rides and games for children and adults, nightly musical entertainment and a feast of favorite carnival foods.

Carnival-goers will have their choice of the Ladies Auxiliary’s hot platters of fried chicken and crab cakes or pit beef, hot dogs, pizza, cheese steaks, and of course, ice cream, funnel cakes and sno-cones for dessert.

Volunteers will set up new picnic areas for families to sit and eat dinner, said Robbie Ruch, the carnival’s organizer.

Ruch, a volunteer fireman with the fire department, said he has been planning the details of the carnival since January with the help of a volunteer committee. Volunteers are still needed to help during the week, he added.

Some rides and entertainment are new this year, Ruch said, though the fireworks display, scheduled for Friday evening, is back for a second year.

‘‘I think people really enjoyed that, especially in the Sykesville-Eldersburg area because it was close to home,” he said of the fireworks display.

Carnival-goers will also have a chance to win prize money through a $10,000 raffle on Saturday. The first-place winner receives $7,000; second-place wins $2,000 and the third-place winner walks away with $1,000.

Dennis Beard, spokesman for the fire department, said he was not aware of any special celebrations in recognition of the carnival’s 75th anniversary, but that does not mean that Sykesville’s carnival is dull.

‘‘It’s a family carnival, and I guess in some ways it’s a small or very miniature theme park,” Beard said.

Proceeds from the carnival will go toward the department’s operating budget. ‘‘Very rarely have we ever used the money from our carnival for a specific item,” Beard said.
