A man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a flash fire at a Rockville house, according to fire officials.

The 45-year-old contractor was refinishing the wooden floor of the colonial-style house on Aster Boulevard when fumes from a sealant were possibly ignited by the pilot light of the gas fireplace on the first floor, triggering a flash fire, Pete Piringer, fire and rescue spokesman, said.

The man remains in an area hospital with second-degree burns to his neck, face, arms, upper torso and head, Piringer said.

Piringer said his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

“Often those types of sealers are toxic but also flammable,“ Piringer said. “Typically, fumes build up and that’s what catches on fire.“

The fire spread to other combustible materials and, by the time firefighters arrived, flames had spread to the second floor and the roof.

The residents of the house were not home at the time of the fire.

A cat and dog were also rescued from the basement of the house. The cat was resuscitated by firefighters, but the dog was uninjured, Piringer said.

The fire caused about $350,000 in damages to the Woodley Gardens house, he said. It destroyed about 50 percent of the house, which was deemed unsafe to occupy.

The Red Cross assisted the family in finding temporary housing, Piringer said.
