Police charged a 16-year-old girl with second-degree assault, possession of a concealed dangerous weapon, and possession of a deadly weapon with intent to injure in connection with a stabbing Tuesday morning at Montgomery Blair High School, according to Montgomery County Police.
The girl was released to her parents' custody, according to county police.
Police say the girl and a 16-year-old boy were engaged in a verbal altercation in a second-floor hallway between classes. As the boy began to walk away, the girl stabbed a 16-year-old boy near his shoulder blade with a sharp object believed to be a kitchen knife. Both are students at the Silver Spring school at 51 University Blvd. West.
The girl dropped the weapon and another 16-year-old girl picked it up. She was later charged with possession of a concealed weapon on school property and released to the custody of her parents, according to a news release from county police.
The boy was initially treated by the school nurse and then at an area hospital. He was released a short time later. No other students were injured.
The girl who allegedly stabbed the boy fled from the school and was apprehended by the school's Educational Facilities Officer on a Metrobus not far from the school, according to the release. Both girls were charged as juveniles. Further action will be handled by the Department of Juvenile Justice.
County police detectives are still in the process of confirming that the kitchen knife was the weapon used during the assault.
