The Greater Olney Civic Association joined the Sandy Spring Civic Association in opposing the ezStorage facility proposed for the commercial area of Sandy Spring.
Joy Turner and Hank Lieberman, representing the Sandy Spring civic group, presented an overview of the project at last week's GOCA meeting, explaining that while it is an acceptable use of the property in terms of zoning guidelines, they do not believe that it offers any benefit to the community.
"We are trying to grow our downtown and make the entry historic, and want to create a walkable, sustainable community," Turner said. "This would be 900 units, providing no employment or community use. We are asking GOCA for its support to oppose the plan."
The property in question housed the former W.H. Rental Center and is located at 500 Olney-Sandy Spring Road.
GOCA representatives passed a resolution to oppose the project, and officers will send a letter to Park and Planning stating that position.
Officers sought for association
Ron Berger, GOCA election chairman, announced that the organization is looking for candidates for next year's slate of officers.
"We know of some current officers that are not staying on, and there will probably be at least one contested race, Berger said. "This will be a different and interesting situation."
Berger said if races are contested, it would be the first time in 24 years that happened.
Art Brodsky and Helene Rosenheim will serve as GOCA's nominating committee.
Nominations will be announced in January and elections will take place in February.
