Today through Nov. 24 several local churches will be collecting gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need.
This year is Frederick County's first taking part in the collection for Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian relief organization. Operation Christmas Child teams will travel by truck, bus, train, helicopter, boat, foot, dog-sled, mule and even camel to deliver them to children in need.
"These kids haven't received, usually, a gift before. Some of them don't even know what Christmas is," said Sarah Klute, a media associate with Operation Christmas Child.
The organization suggests filling the shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, necessity items, candy, and a letter of encouragement.
